Image: Haye has something for Wladimir when he holdsBy William Mackay: WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) reportedly has some kind of a secret strategy to use when his opponent IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) attempts to clinchand lean on Haye this Saturday night to try and shut Haye’s offense. It sounds like more nonsense from Booth.

Haye’s trainer/manager Adam Booth says that Haye will use something to keep Wladimir from wanting to grab. It’s too mysterious to me. Booth doesn’t say what precisely Haye will be using to keep from getting clinched by the huge 6’6” Wladimir, but you guess it’s going to be something involving Haye tagging Wladimir a lot while being held.

The danger here is that if Wladimir has his arms wrapped around Haye it could cause Haye to land shots to the back of Wladimir’s head, and that could result in Haye getting points taken off. It may not matter if Haye’s not concerned with losing points, because he probably won’t win a decision anyway.

However, once Haye starts losing multiple points for throwing rabbit punches it could put him in the danger of being disqualified. After all, this fight won’t be taking place in the UK where Haye has gotten away with throwing rabbit punches in the past. The fight is taking place in Germany where Wladimir is a big star, not Haye. Wladimir’s holding is one thing but if Haye can’t keep his punches in the legal area of Wladimir’s head we could see a disqualification at some point.

Johnny Nelson, one of Sky Sports commentators, said that Haye should fight Wladimir dirty if he attempts to hold and lean. Nelson advised that Haye should tag Wladimir low with his forearm. This might work on the short term basis but if Haye is frequently tagging Wladimir low it could result in Haye being disqualified. At the same time it will make Haye look like a cheat if he keeps tagging Wladimir low every time he’s grabbed. And if Haye mixes it up with rabbit punches and low blows we really could see Haye getting a quick disqualification by the referee.
