Image: Beristain has a poor opinion of Chavez Jr. and Saul AlvarezBy Gerardo Granados: In a recent interview on ESPN GOLPE A GOLPE hall of fame trainer Ignacio Beristain stated that both Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Saul Canelo Alvarez were just good prospects and that the main Mexican TV networks should keep them by they own. When asked if both have future as world champions he answered that it is difficult if they don’t improve. He was also asked who can both defeat and Beristain answered with quite mock that only the ones that they have been faced implying that both are just good prospects that have nothing special. He even stated that for both it would impossible to defeat the ones of the level of Miguel Angel Cotto, Sergio Martinez or Perro Angulo.

Beristain is a savvy trainer but his words were quite hard on the young lions. It is probable that Chavez Jr doesn’t have a promising future against top fighters but Alvarez is a different story. It is intriguing to hear such comments from a trainer who has trained twenty two world champions and three hall of fame members: Humberto Gonzalez, Daniel Zaragoza and Ricardo Lopez and also future members Oscar De La Hoya and Juan Manuel Marquez. If Beristain thinks both Chavez Jr and Alvarez are just good prospects then he must have seen something obvious for his eyes that others are not able to see. Chavez Jr has a poor defense and that is his major weakness but to say that Alvarez is only a good prospect might be an overstatement by him. Not the less some truth has to be awarded to his statement.

What if he had been questioned about the real chances of his pupil Juan Manuel Marquez have to defeat Manny Pacquiao, or his opinion about the two fights that Marquez believes to have won against Pacman, would he have answered that Marquez did not won both fights?

Beristain was severe on his opinions towards Chavez Jr and Alvarez, he was just not been polite to them and now both Chavez Jr and Alvarez will have an opinion on this issue. It would be good if Marquez was able to engage against the young champions so he could demonstrate what his long time trainer stated but that will never happened and only time will prove him right or wrong.

Is Ignacio Beristain right and both Chavez Jr and Alvarez are just good prospects with no chances to defeat any of the top fighters in their weight division?
