Image: The key to Johnson beating Froch: Hit him as hard as possible with every punchBy Scott Gilfoid: In making an in-depth study of WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) and past fights, I’ve noticed that Froch shows his vulnerability when he’s hit hard by fighters loading up with their shots. We saw Froch staggered twice by Andre Dirrell in the past, dropped by Jermain Taylor, hurt by Mikkel Kessler and momentarily hurt by Arthur Abraham. This tells me that Froch is vulnerable when getting smashed to the head.

Froch will be facing power puncher Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s) in a crucial Super Six tournament semifinals bout on June 4th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Froch has seen video of Johnson’s past fights and is concerned enough with what he’s seen to want to make complete changes with his fighting style to become more of a boxer. Froch knows that Johnson has too much power for him to stand in there with him and risk getting his jaw tagged and put on the deck.

So, the key to beat Froch is for Johnson to use every ounce of his energy in every punch and look to knock Froch out. Froch’s chin isn’t as sturdy as people think and I can’t see him taking more than a couple of rounds of hard shots from Johnson without either going down or heading for the hills and running. When faced with a guy that doesn’t mind getting hit hard himself, Froch is going to be be like a guy floundering at sea. He’s not going to know what to do and will quickly lose his senses and start running. If Froch gets stubborn about it and tries to trade, Johnson will have him right where he wants him and will clock him with one of his power shots and leave Froch crawling around on the canvas wondering what happened. As Dirrell showed, if you hit Froch hard, he gets hurt. This is what Johnson needs to focus on doing. You tag Froch with everything you got with every shot, and he’ll either run or go down. Either way, Johnson wins.
