Pacquiao’s fights are becoming incredibly boring to watch

Image: Pacquiao's fights are becoming incredibly boring to watchBy Chris Williams: In a recent article at The Ring, one particularly brilliant writer was quick enough to observe that Manny Pacquiao’s fights are becoming ever more dull each time out in the past four fights and he feels that this could hurt Pacquiao. I think I have to agree with that. Pacquiao’s last four fights have come against Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito, Joshua Clottey, and Miguel Cotto.

I’m not even going into the mismatches against Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya. Those weren’t interesting fights to watch because of how one-sided they were, and while some people thought that those fights were going to be competitive ones going in, I wasn’t one of them.

I knew De La Hoya was a part time fighter who was losing more than he was winning by the time he fought Pacquiao. And it only took one look at how much weight that De La Hoya had taken off to fight Pacquiao at their agreed upon weight of 147 to know that De La Hoya had taken off too much weight and was going to be too weak to fight. And I never saw Hatton as being a worthy opponent. He had been ballooning up in weight in between fights, reportedly not taking care of his body, and he had already been knocked out by Floyd Mayweather Jr. My point it none of these fighters were competitive or even slightly interesting to watch. I don’t think it was fun watching Pacquiao beat up Clottey and Margarito, did you?

Compare those fights with someone like Marcos Maidana who brings excitement to each and every fight he takes, and there’s no comparison. Pacquiao’s fights aren’t interesting to watch and I personally don’t feel that they’re worthy of the $50+ price tag for them. I think Pacquiao could be worth that if he at least fought someone that would give him a good fight like Sergio Martinez, Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz or Timothy Bradley. Ortiz and Martinez would be PPV worthy fights in my view. I would pay to see Pacquiao fight those guys and I think it would be good for his career. It would be a heck of a lot better than to see Pacquiao beating up on old guys or ones that have been coming off of losses.

Instead of matching Pacquiao against guys like Mosley simply because of his name value and his ability to make more money, Pacquiao handlers should be thinking in terms of giving the buying public a better product, don’t you think? You can only set up so many mismatches before you start turning off the public. I know if I was serving up a product that I knew wasn’t the best for my customers, I wouldn’t expect them to keep coming back. This is a tough economy and you have to produce. You can’t serve slop and and expect people to gladly pay $50+ each time without getting diminishing returns. I think it’s bad business not only for Pacquiao but for boxing as a whole, since he’s considered to be the top fighter right now in the sport.
