Image: Mike Perez wants a shot at the Klitschkos and Haye, but looks too slow and smallBy Sean McDaniel: It was nice to see Cuban Mike Perez (16-0, 12 KO’s) capture the Prizefighter International heavyweight title last night with a stoppage win over Tye Fields in the 1st round. The southpaw Perez jumped on a tired looking Fields in the opening round and blasted him with shots until the fight was stopped with Fields still standing.

To be honest, it looked like a quick stoppage to me because Fields was just covering up. But nevertheless, the 6-foot Perez got the win and was clearly the best fighter in the tournament. Perez says he now wants to take on heavyweight world champions David Haye and the Klitschko brothers. However, I just can’t see it. Perez looks like a slower, smaller, and weaker version of Cuban Odlanier Solis, and I can’t see him doing well against the Klitschkos.

I think Perez needs to continue fighting and look to try and beat some of the top contenders in the division before he starts calling out the heavyweight champions, because right now, Perez hasn’t shown much other than this tournament. His shots seem to lack big time power and he looks them, which makes him all the more easy to hit. I can see Perez getting beaten by the better contenders like Solis, Alexander Povetkin, Denis Boytsev, Robert Helenius before he would ever get a shot against one of the Klitschko brothers.

In the Prizefighter tourney, Perez destroyed an injured Gregory Tony in the 1st round after Tony hurt his left shoulder. Perez defeated an over-matched Kerston Manswell by a 3 round unanimous decision winning by the scores 30-25, 30-25 and 30-25. I wasn’t impressed with Manswell, as he looked poor. This was a win more by default than by anything.

Fields struggled to beat Michael Sprott by a 3 round decision. Both fighters were hurt early but Fields won it by out-working Sprott.
