Image: Marquez to get $10 million rematch if he beats PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: All 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez has to do is beat WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in proposed fight for November, which Marquez will be receiving $5 million plus an upside of the pay-per-view profits, and he’ll then get a rematch with Pacquiao and be paid $10 million for that fight. That’s the contract that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has offered to Marquez and as you’d guess, Marquez is accepting the offer.

The only question is whether Golden Boy Promotions will match the offer and thus keep the Pacquiao-Marquez III fight from going ahead. It’s highly unlikely that Golden Boy will be able to do this unless they’re willing to take a big hit and lose money on Marquez’s next fight, because Golden Boy has no one to fight Marquez right now that will bring in that kind of big money.

Golden Boy fighters Saul Alvarez and Victor Ortiz, the two names that they’ve mentioned as possible opponents for Marquez, are either too big in the case of Alvarez to make 144, or not a big enough star, as is the case with Ortiz. I can’t see a Marquez-Ortiz fight being a huge one on Pay per view, at least big enough to be able to pay Marquez his $5 million and then give Ortiz his money.

I’m sure Ortiz won’t like getting chump change to fight Marquez and watching him get big money. It seems like Golden Boy will have to let Marquez face Pacquiao. And that brings in the question of whether Marquez can beat Pacquiao to get the $10 million rematch money. With the fight being held at a 144 pound catchweight, instead of near Marquez’s fighting weight of 135, I don’t give Marquez any chance of beating Pacquiao. He’s too small and too old now that he’s turning 38.

It’s another setup fight for Pacquiao. He’s got another old one to fight and by having him fight at pretty much the full welterweight limit, it further stacks the deck in Pacquiao’s favor. The money that Marquez can theoretically get is excellent but what good is it if you’re too old and too small to ever have any chance of getting it? Sure wish Pacquiao would be matched against Sergio Martinez, Paul Williams, Andre Berto or Ortiz. Kind of tired of watching him fight over-matched opponents each time out.
