Image: Khan's next opponent to be named within seven daysBy Sean McDaniel: With WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley showing no interest in accepting the $1.3 million offer for a unification bout with WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, the next plan is for Khan’s promoters from Golden Boy to select from among four potential opponents for Khan’s next fight on July 23. Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, says he’ll be naming Khan’s next opponent in the next seven days. There was a deadline today for Bradley to agree to the money offered to him for the Khan fight. Thus far, there has been no indication that Bradley will take the fight.

The choices for Khan are currently as follows: Marcos Maidana, Zab Judah, Erik Morales and Robert Guerrero. Judah and Morales are likely the leading choices for Khan, as Maidana gave Khan all he could handle in December and it’s not likely that Golden Boy will want to risk Khan before he’s made it big and they’ve had a chance to cash out. Morales is perhaps the safest pick, but this might be a problem because there is talk of Morales and Maidana fighting a rematch and that could have priority over a fight with Khan.

That leaves Judah. Khan wants to capture another title and Judah has the IBF belt in his possession. If Khan can beat Judah, it would give Khan a second belt and help make a name for him with the U.S. public. Judah isn’t the same fighter he once was, so if Khan can avoid getting taken out with one of Judah’s big shots, he could get through this fight intact with Judah’s IBF title.
