Zab Judah vs. Juan Manuel Marquez on July 30th?

By Dan Ambrose: Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KO’s) may decide to capture an easy paper title by taking on IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO’s) on July 30th in what would be a pay-per-view bout. Dan Rafael of ESPN is reporting that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is trying to get a contract extension with the 37-year-old Marquez, and part of that extension would see Marquez moving up in weight and fighting the 33-year-old Judah for his newly won International Boxing Federation belt.

While this may seem like a risky move for Marquez given that Judah was one of the best fighters in boxing for the past 10 years, he’s not quite the same fighter he used to be in his prime. Judah is now a fighter that has a very low work rate and is living off of his ability to land one big punch – typically an uppercut – to win his fights. It takes more than one punch to beat a fighter like Marquez, who is quite skilled at blocking uppercuts. As such, Judah will likely get easily outworked and stopped in this fight. Judah beat South African Kaizer Mabuza by a 7th round stoppage in his last bout to capture the IBF title on March 5th.

However, in his fight before that, Judah won a very questionable 12 round decision over Argentinian Lucas Matthysse in November 2010. Many boxing fans who saw that fight felt that Matthysse should have been given the decision win. Judah simply got outworked by Matthysse from the 5th round on and Judah’s one punch that he’s come to rely on, his uppercut, had no affect on Matthysse.

If Marquez can beat Judah, it will be Marquez’s 4th world title win in as many divisions. The victory would give Marquez more credibility by showing that he can move up in weight and beat bigger fighters and it would be the perfect lead in for a bout against Marquez’s old nemesis Manny Pacquiao.
