What now for Samuel Peter?

Image: What now for Samuel Peter?By Gari Jones: After suffering a 2nd consecutive KO loss at the hands of upcoming Finland Robert Helenius, the question is what does former WBC Heavyweight Champion Samuel Peter do now. After having had time to reflect on his fight I wonder what can Samuel do or what should he do now he’s slipped outside title contention rankings.

Watching Samuel at the end of round three it was worrying to me to see him standing in his corner looking tired, with his mouth hanging out and gasping for air looking rather dejected, despite the fact Helenius hadn’t really done any telling damage to Peter’s until about round six onwards, by Robert’s own admission he was taking the fight rather calmly for the first six rounds and only after Uli Wegner reminded him that he was in a boxing match.

Now it could be the toll of training, or lack of proper preparation (I hardly even heard of Helenius) or maybe it’s the punishment he’s taken over the years, especially at the hands of Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, it’s worth mentioning also he’s lost 4 of his last 8 fights. Well whatever it is that’s I hope his training camp figure it out.

BUT what will Samuel Peter do now? His loss has moved him down to rank 20th on the BOXREC.com heavyweights list, so a fight for a no’1 contender is not about to come up, the loss against Helenius was for the WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title and the vacant WBA Inter-Continental heavyweight title would’ve given him some recognition as a continental title holder but he doesn’t even have that distinction.

Samuel Peter is only 30yrs old so time is on his side, but he will have to work his way back into contention by fighting and winning on the domestic scene for sometime before he even earns another chance to face off against a Klitschko for a world title shot, and given his record against them (3 losses) he may have lost his willingness for such an endeavor. I can’t see David Haye hanging around for him either and even if he did, I’m sure David would not to engage him in a title fight.

I don’t think Peter is going to retire anytime soon, but I do think he needs to take time off from boxing and rethink his whole style, preparation and strategy to fighting maybe even move to a new camp. I thought that Peter looked okay for the first 3 rounds against Robert Helenius but after that he looked very average, hardly any head or foot movement, not defending him-self at times and just seemed out of idea’s other than swing widely and hope to land the KO punch. I’m surprised Helenius didn’t finish the fight off sooner but I’ll put that down lack of experience, once he found his groove he landed with a tasty left hook that would’ve flattened any Heavyweight I feel.

Peter can bounce back from this and he can become a contender again even become a Champion, but I do think he needs to rethink everything and come back with a whole new game plan. Please give me your thoughts on this whether you agree or not.
