Should Hatton make a shock return to the ring?

By Dallan O’ Donnell: As first reported in the ‘News of the world’ a British newspaper, Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton has been offered a shock final chance to return to the ring by Golden boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Hatton has not fought since his 2nd round Knockout defeat by Manny Pacquaio and is now said to be considering a comeback of mammoth proportions against Mexican ring legend and five weight world champion Eric Morales.

It would be easy for us all to say that this would be a pointless fight with no real substance to the outcome at all, but is it really pointless? I think not. Morales was considered washed up only a few weeks ago when nobody gave him a chance of victory over Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas. Despite eventually losing the contest on points I had Morales winning the fight with cleaner work from start to finish. A terrific contest it turned out to be and sure fire fight of the year contender which proved the last things to leave a fighter are his punch and heart. And that is what both Morales and Hatton are made up of, heart.

The only doubt I would have is Ricky’s mental state. Has he finally recovered from that devastating knockout to Pacquaio? If he has and he wants to return to win again then this fight would be huge. We all remember how popular Ricky was, and still is, and Morales has the whole of Mexico behind him, he is a national hero. This fight would make a killing on PPV and draw thousands to any arena to watch. If the fight ever does happen what would the winner be rewarded with? A title fight with the winner of Khan- Bradley surely.

If Khan and Hatton were to both win it would be the battle of Britain if the two were to ever face off. As always it would be premature to say this fight will happen. Although there have been meetings held with De La Hoya which have been confirmed by Gareth Williams, Hatton’s Lawyer and CEO of Hatton promotions, and in his words the ball is in Ricky’s court, it is up to him. Every great fighter deserves one last shot. Hatton and Morales are no exceptions.
