Prescott looks way more impressive than Khan in victory

By William Mackay: All I can say after watching light welterweight contender Breidis Prescott (24-2, 19 KO’s) defeat an iron-chinned Bayan Jargal (15-2-3, 9 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night is that Prescott looked a lot better in beating Jargal than Amir Khan did in winning a 6th round technical decision against little known Paul McCloskey last weekend. Prescott was very impressive against Jargal, landing huge shots throughout the fight and winning an easy points decision. Prescott was throwing with monstrous power in the first five to six rounds of the fight, and had that been Khan in there with him instead of the steel-chinned Jargal, I have no doubts that Khan would have been knocked out in that fight.

It’s been a while since I had last seen Prescott fight and I had completely forgotten how much of a big puncher he is. Last night, Prescott made a believer out of me. I think Prescott punches harder than Marcos Maidana, I really do. Prescott may not punch as well as Maidana on the inside, but on the outside Prescott is a much bigger puncher than Maidana and a lot faster than him and capable of throwing consecutive quick power shots.

I can see why Khan’s management opted to put Khan in with the obscure McCloskey recently rather than putting him back in with Prescott because this guy is deadly. Jargal was taking a terrible beating until Prescott changed his game plan and started boxing him in the 7th round. But still, Prescott’s jab is like a power punch all to itself. Prescott’s jab is incredibly hard and he’s throwing it much more now than he ever did before. If Prescott had used his jab in his fights against Kevin Mitchell and Miguel Vazquez, I have no doubts whatsoever that he would have won both of those fights.

Prescott made the mistake of throwing nothing but power shots in that fight and those guys were able to run and move to escape. But with Prescott now using a constant telephone pole-like jab, I think he totally dominate Vazquez and Mitchell. And I don’t think Khan would stand a chance against Prescott. No way. But after last night’s performance, I can’t see Khan’s management putting Khan back in there with Prescott. He’s too good and he’s the real deal. I see Prescott as a much more complete and superior fighter than Khan. He’s simply better in every part of his game right now after his management has him moving more and using his jab.
