By Dan Ambrose: Newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 Ko’s) will likely be facing his mandatory challenger, the number #2 ranked Selcuy Aydin (21-0, 16 KO’s) in the 24-year-old Ortiz’s first defense of his World Boxing Council title in the fall, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. There’s also a chance – a very, very small chance – that Ortiz could fight unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. next.

Golden Boy Promotions like either of these fights for Ortiz. However, Mayweather probably won’t be eager to go along with a fight against a slugger like Ortiz when it wouldn’t be a fight that would be neccesarily a huge one because Ortiz still isn’t a really big name yet. It would be good fight but it’s extremely doubtful that Mayweather will sign on for a fight where he would have to take a lot of punishment from a young southpaw slugger with the speed and power of Ortiz.

As such, the Aydin fight seems to the one that has the biggest chance of happening next. Aydin can punch, but is kind of limited. He’ll be in Ortiz’s face all night long looking to slug it out in the trenches. I see this as a good fight. I don’t know why HBO wasn’t interested in seeing Berto defend his title against Aydin in the past because it would have been a much better fight compared to Berto’s mismatches with Freddy Hernandez, Juan Urango. Carlos Quintana and Steve Forbes. Ortiz is the bigger puncher compared to Aydin and will have a two inch height and a significant speed advantage. I see this fight as somewhat similar to Ortiz’s fight against Marcos Maidana, only that Aydin won’t be able to hurt Ortiz and will end up getting mowed down at some point. But he’ll be in close looking to make it an exciting fight for as long as it lasts.
