Image: Morales lost to Maidana because he didn’t throw enough punches and was too weak – ResponseBy Dave Mackfoid:In a recent post a writer suggested that 34-year-old Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO’s) lost a decision to Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) due to not landing enough power shots, even though Morales clearly landed the better quality shots and more eye catching flurries. Firstly the article this is based on is just a way of trying to ensure the Maidana fans that he had a chance of picking up a victory when in reality he should have been a total laughing stock for losing to a boxer that is totally past his best.

The writer suggests that not only did Maidana land more shots but they were of better quality, Maidana should have won by a greater margin. So in response surley it is impossible that there should have been a greater margin when it seems hardly possible that Maidana could have won more than 6 rounds. Morales easily outclassed Maidana and took back to boxing school, he made Maidana look totally one dimensional and not only took all of his power shots but had the coordination to come back with flurries of his own which all landed due to the lack of any defence by Maidana.

Maidana should have got numerous points deducted, but the referee chickened out, Maidana continuously kept punching when the referee shouted stop, once is ok, twice is pushing it, continuously doing it round after round is a joke. Also how did the referee justify not taking a point away for the continuous rubbing of Maidana’s head against Morales’s closed eye? It almost makes you think how good a job the officials did in the Khan fight.

Morales easily scored 10/9 rounds in 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10 which should have gave him the victory he deserved. Maidana totally underestimated his opponent thinking he could walk straight through Morales without any resistance, Morales proved the Argentine wrong and continuously turned his man making him miss wildly and keeping him behind a stiff snapping jab which he worked off landing hooks and uppercuts. So how can the judges justify giving rounds to Maidana? Well he did throw a lot of shots, most of which never landed, he also came forward a lot, but was also pinned back on his heels. Surely the judges would look at Maidana coming forward landing possibly 1 or 2 out of 5 or 6 shots and then see him take 3 or 4 shots pinned back on his heels and think Morales had the more effective pressure? Apparently not, It was after all Maidana’s coming through party, in other words Morales probably could have won every round that night and still wouldn’t have got a decision from the judges.

What is next? Rematch, Morales deserved to win, or at least draw; there was nobody in the world who thought Maidana won shown by the total dismay of the point’s victory after the fight.
