Kell Brook to fight on June 25th

By William Mackay: #2 WBO welterweight contender Kell Brook (23-0, 16 KO’s) will be making his first fight with his new promoter Matchroom Sport’s against a still to be determined opponent. Although it’s high time that the 24-year-old Brook finally face a top tier opponent for the first time in his seven-year pro career, you can expect Brook to continue to be matched against a B or C level welterweight.

For some reason Brook has been brought along slowly and matched carefully without letting him be tested by a a fringe contender or one of the old former champions at light welterweight or welterweight. Brook is going to likely have a lot of problems when he does get a title shot in the future because he’ll be making a dramatic jump from B and C level guys to an A fighter and he’s going to be in for a bit of a shock.

In his last fight, Brook defeated little known Phillip Kotey by a 2nd round TKO last December, and in his fight before that, Brook defeated B level Michael Jennings by a 5th round stoppage last September. Hopefully, Brook can be at least put in with someone like Shawn Porter, Ed Paredes or Mike Alvarado in his next fight. Ideally, I’d like to see Brook face number #1 contender Mike Jones, but that’s obviously is not going to happen. Jones is too dangerous and would likely knock Brook out in six rounds or less. My guess is Brook is pitted against either another 2nd tier welterweight or a smaller fringe light welterweight is brought in for Brook to fight. I hope I’m wrong but I see this as pretty much a continuation of the past with Brook matched against another B class fighter.
