Is Erik Morales too tough for Ricky Hatton?

By Sean McDaniel: The talk is that Ricky Hatton discussing with his rather Ray Hatton the possibility of making a comeback to fight 34-year-old Erik Morales in a fight that could bring Hatton a huge payday of as much as $4 million. Not bad for a fight against someone that no longer has much pop his punches, as Morales showed in his loss to Marcos Maidana recently. This is a very winnable fight for Hatton. Morales looked to be only able to fight in brief spurts and gave away a lot of rounds through inactivity.

Morales ran out of gas by the 10th round, allowing Maidana to come on and win the decision. Hatton is a better inside fighter than Maidana and has much better power and accuracy at close range. This would be a fight where Hatton would be able to control the inside and do a lot of damage against Morales. The only question would be Hatton’s chin. He hasn’t been hit since being stopped in the 2nd round by Manny Pacquiao two years ago, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be able to take some of the big shots that Morales tags him with.

One thing that Hatton has going for him in a fight with Morales is that Hatton would be able to see the shots coming. Morales didn’t look all that fast in the Maidana fight, and didn’t seem to be all that powerful either. The Hatton from two years ago beats Morales all day and all night long. But after two years of inactivity and soft living, rich food and lot of drink, it’s unknown whether Hatton would be the same fighter he once was if he can get himself into reasonable shape. In recent pictures, he didn’t look grotesquely overweight like he was earlier last year. But he does need to trim off around 30 to 50 pounds of blubber to make the 140 pound weight. I think that would be Hatton’s best weight. If he comes in at 147, he might be too sluggish and could end up tiring out and losing.
