Adamek beats McBride, the WBC makes Adamek #1 contender

By Dan Ambrose: The WBC seemingly has rewarded heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) for beating 37-year-old journeyman Kevin McBride (35-9-1, 29 KO’s) last Saturday night by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision by ranking the 34-year-old Adamek as the number #1 contender for WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s). This is really neither here nor there because Adamek already has a title fight against Vitali in the bag for September and doesn’t need the WBC to push him up from #2 to #1.

Adamek defeated a badly over-matched 285 pound McBride by the lopsided scores of 119-108, 120-107 and 119-108 at the Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey. Adamek says he used the big 6’6″ McBride as practice for the even bigger 6’7″ Vitali. However, McBride is hardly someone that can adequately prepare Adamek for the beating that he’s going to take against Vitali. McBride was painfully slow and unable to land much of anything against Adamek last Saturday night. Vitali is going to be lighting Adamek up like a Christmas tree the moment the fight starts and the bout may not make it out of the 1st round.

Adamek used a lot of movement against McBride, but didn’t look good in doing so. Adamek isn’t quick on his feet and is still very easy to hit even with his movement. With even less power compared to some of the fighters that Vitali has been facing since he made his comeback in 2008, Adamek is going to be running for his life against Vitali. Given that the fight will be taking place in Adamek’s home country of Poland, it might be more than a little embarrassing for Adamek to be seen running all night.

Since he has basically no chance of beating Vitali, Adamek would be better off to go down swinging in the first couple of rounds rather than fleeing. He’s kidding himself if he thinks he can beat Vitali using his hit and run style of fighting. That won’t work at all; He’ll just cause a lot of fans to get turned off by his performance and he’ll get knocked out anyway once Vitali catches up to him.
