By William Mackay: Despite losing by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night against Saul Alvarez (36-0-1, 25 KO’s) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Matthew Hatton (41-5-2, 16 KO’s) may soon get another title shot, this time against the winner of the April 16th fight between WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is looking at matching the 29-year-old Hatton against the winner of that fight, according to boxing news from the Daily Mail.

Oscar De La Hoya, the president of Golden Boy, thinks Hatton can win a title. It’s kind of hard to agree with De La Hoya given how weak and poor Hatton looked in the Alvarez fight. However, De La Hoya sees Hatton’s loss to Alvarez as more of a product of Hatton facing a fighter that will soon be considered a great.

If Golden Boy does end up matching Hatton against the Berto-Ortiz winner, it could cause a little controversy because Hatton is ranked #5 by the WBC, and #4 ranked Mike Jones appears to be the better fighter and the one that probably deserves a title shot against the Berto-Ortiz winner. However, Jones doesn’t have the Hatton last name going for him and he also is promoted by Golden Boy rival Top Rank. That might leave Jones out in the cold for awhile.

Hatton would likely lose badly to Berto due to his lack of power and hand speed. Berto puts his shots together much better than the 20-year-old Alvarez and we could see a knockout for Berto. Ortiz is a lot more like Alvarez, and Hatton would probably survive to lose another lopsided 12 round decision.
