Image: Klitschko vs. Solis: At the end of the day, Odlanier is still too short and fat to winBy Jason Kim: You want to pull for the underdog Odlanier Solis (17-0, 12 KO’s) in his March 19th fight against the towering 6’7″ 250 pound WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) when they fight at the Lanxess-Arena, in Cologne, Germany. However, at 6’1″ and a hefty 260 lbs, Solis has about a good a chance of winning as I do on winning the lottery tonight. It’s just not going to happen. Giving away six inches in height and much more than in terms of power and experience against upper level opposition, Solis just doesn’t have the physical tools to get this job done.

The fact that he’s let his weight get way out of control since leaving the amateur ranks in 2005 is just one more nail in his coffin for the Klitschko fight. Recently, WBA heavyweight champion David Haye said that he can see Solis having a chance at beating Vitali if Solis can melt down to 230 pounds. In other words, if Solis can take off an extra 30 pounds of fat on top of whatever weight that he’s going to already have to take off during training camp, he would have a chance.

I think that’s asking way too much of Solis to take off that kind of weight and still be strong enough to beat a fighter who is just naturally much bigger. Let’s assume that Solis is coming into training camp weighing around 280 for the Vitali fight. It means that he’s going to have to take off 50 pounds of blubber just to get down to 230. I don’t know of any fighter that can take off that kind of fat and still fight at a high level. I think Solis can do it if he wants to, but he’ll be too weak to do much in the fight and will take a beating. Solis is better off staying fat and trying his best to outwork Vitali. He can’t knock him out because he doesn’t punch hard enough, but maybe Solis can outwork him if he uses an in an out attack.
