Groves stops Allotey in 4th round; DeGale next up

By William Mackay: Unbeaten Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (12-0, 10 KO’s) had his way against the badly over-matched southpaw Ghanaian Daniel Allotey (13-2, 6 KO’s), knocking him down two times and stopping him in the 4th of a one-sided fight.

Groves, 22, chose the southpaw Allotey because he wanted some experience against a southpaw before his upcoming fight against the southpaw British super middleweight champion James DeGale.

Groves might have selected someone a little too weak, however, because Allotey with little more than a punching bag for Groves on Saturday night and appeared to be several levels below Groves’ last opponent Kenny Anderson, who had Groves on the deck and gave him problems all night long.

Allotey, although a southpaw, has absolutely nothing in common with DeGale. It’s like challenger taking a tune-up against Tyson Fury and then thinking that will help him beat one of the Klitschkos.

Groves wasted his time with this fight, because Allotey wasn’t anywhere near his league and, of course, nowhere near the level of DeGale.

Groves dropped Allotey twice in the 4th. The referee then stepped in and halted the slaughter at that point.
After the fight, Adam Booth, the trainer for Groves, said “The fight [Groves vs. DeGale] has to happen. I have been speaking with James’ people on a daily basis and we are very close to making an announcement.”

Booth is correct about this fight being the one that boxing fans want to see. Groves doesn’t appear to be on the same level as DeGale, but it will be nice to see DeGale finally putting to rest this fight and getting Groves out of the way so that he can move on to world class opposition and leave Groves to continue on the domestic level.
