By Jim Dower: Much to everyone’s relief, the mouthwatering fight between former two-time light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (29-1, 17 KO’s) and Romanian Adrian Diaconu (27-2, 15 KO’s) will go ahead for May 21st on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins vs. Jean Pascal bout at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. The fight negotiations between Dawson and Diaconu have been successfully completed and the fight is ready to go ahead.

Recently, there were problems in the negotiations and it was looking like Dawson and Diaconu wouldn’t take place. Librado Anrade was someone that was being mentioned as a possible opponent for Dawson to fight. Andrade would have been about as good of an opponent as Diaconu, as he’s got the same high pressure style of fighting.

If Dawson can beat Diaconu, he’ll get the opportunity to fight the winner of the Hopkins-Pascal fight on HBO. Dawson was beaten by Pascal in an 11th round technical decision after suffering a cut in the 11th round from a clash of heads. Dawson had Pascal hurt at the time of the stoppage and it looked like Dawson may have been able to score a knockout. However, the ringside doctor quickly pulled the plug on the fight and Dawson was unable to finish the round to see if his corner could have stopped or slowed down the bleeding for the cut. Dawson would like to fight the 46-year-old Hopkins, who Dawson has been trying to get a fight against for the past two years without luck. Dawson is a bad match-up for Hopkins because of Dawson’s fast combinations and excellent defensive skills.
