Witter could be Khan’s next opponent

By William Mackay: Former WBC light welterweight champion Junior Witter (37-3-2, 22 KO’s) is 36-years-old and will be turning 37 in March, hasn’t fought in the past 18 months, has lost two out of his last three fights and recently confessed on Sky Sports Ringside that he can no longer make light welterweight because it drains him. This is the guy that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) may end up fighting on April 16th at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England.

Ignoring the potential that Witter may be completely shot, how can Khan be trying to fight a guy that is saying he can’t make the weight class anymore? Is Khan going to fight Witter at a catch weight to accommodate him? Of course not. Witter, if he wants the Khan fight, will have to drain down to 140 to take the fight, and for old guy like Witter, it’s going to leave him badly depleted.

This is a lousy pick if you ask me. There’s too many negatives against it, because the guy is too old, losing left and right and can’t make the weight. This is like taking an old lion without teeth, and dragging him into an arena to arena to face a young lion with it’s whole set of choppers still intact, albeit a young lion that has problems when he gets conked on the head hard. That’s not even sporting. I’d rather see Khan face Lamont Peterson than Witter, and I positively hate the thought of Khan facing the feather-fisted Peterson. I got an idea. Why doesn’t Khan man up and try and avenge his 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott? How about that? Oh, I forgot, Prescott can punch, so I guess he’s off limits to Khan.
