Vitali has toughest fight in years against Solis on 3/19

By Jason Kim: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) hasn’t had to face any real boxers since he made his comeback in 2008, beating then WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter to capture the World Boxing Council title. Since that fight, it’s been pretty much the same steady course of mediocre heavyweights for Vitali to run over for easy wins.

It’s gotten so bad that Vitali appeared to hold up one of his opponents two fights ago when he seemed to take it easy on Alberto Sosnowski for nine rounds until suddenly turning on the power surge in the 10th and easily taking him out. But on March 19th, Vitali is facing unbeaten Odlanier Solis (17-0, 12 KO’s), a classical boxer/puncher with excellent skills underneath a thick coat of fat on his short 6’1″ 260 pound frame.

If Solis can get his weight down to a reasonable level, say 235, he may have a good chance of pulling off an upset on 3/19. However, it’s not promising that the lowest weight that Solis has been able to get down to since turning pro in 2007 was 246 in a fight in 2008. Solis seems to be getting bigger with each fight instead of skinnier. That’s going to be a problem against the in shape Vitali if Solis can’t find some discipline and take off all the weight that he’s put on since capturing the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics.

Solis weighed 200 pounds at that time and looked great. He appears to be the same size in terms of muscles, but has packed on 60 pounds of sludge on his frame that he has to carry around when he fights. It’s a testament to how good Solis is that he can fight with that much fat on his body, but it’s going to be his downfall in the Vitali bout if he can’t get down to at least 235 or lower.
