Is Amir Khan making a wrong choice?

By Dan Henderson: Rumors emerged today that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) is in negotiations with Junior Witter to be his opponent for his April 16th bout at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester.

I feel Witter is a big step backwards for Khan. Khan is coming off the back of a win against Marcos Maidana and Witter has already admitted he can’t even make the Light-welterweight limit. Witter has a fight scheduled in Canada against Victor Puiu on February 19th at welterweight.

Junior Witter was quoted in saying “Khan, you have never boxed anyone with my experience, calibre and credentials so if you want to start playing with fire be careful you might get burnt.” Well, I think Witter seems to forget that Khan has fought Marco Antonio Barrera. Admittedly he was over the hill when the fight happened but even at that age, Barrera is a better calibre fighte. Also, Khan has fought Marcos Maidana and Paulie Mallignaggi, both better than Witter.

My point is Khan should not take this fight. He could face Kell Brook, albeit not being a massive fight in the states but a very big fight in the UK. There is always the option of fighting a Prescott rematch where Khan would make a lot of money but also if he could avenge the loss he would show a lot of character.

Khan will get away with this blatant mismatch as its only a tune-up. I don’t mind this fight as long as Khan fights the unification bout against Timothy Bradley, a fight which is rumored to be happening in the summer.

My view is Khan is taking the easiest option available to him, which he shouldn’t be allowed to do the WBA should step in and find a good and deserving mandatory challenger.
