Holyfield vs. Nielsen moved to May 7th

By Eric Thomas: Evander Holyfield’s fight with 45-year-old Brian Nielsen (64-2, 43 KO’s) has been moved from March 5th to May 7th at the Koncerthuset, Copenhagen, Denmark. The fight has been moved because of a bad cut over Holyfield’s left eye that he suffered in his last fight in January against Sherman Williams.

The cut needs more time to heal before Holyfield can get back in the ring and try to defend his obscure WBF heavyweight title. Holyfield last faced 38-year-old Sherman Williams on January 22nd in West Virginia and the fight ended prematurely in a 3rd round no contest after Holyfield’s left eye was cut from a headbutt.

The cut really didn’t seem that bad and appeared under control at the time the fight was halted after the 3rd round. Holyfield was badly hurt in the 3rd by a series of big looping right hands from Williams. Instead of backing off, Holyfield kept coming forward and was staggered several times in the round.

It looked as if Holyfield would have been knocked out if he had come out for the 4th because he was taking one-way punishment and his punches had no power on them and weren’t slowing Williams down at all. Holyfield is still committed to trying to capture and unify all of the heavyweight titles.

However, he’s not fighting well and the level of opposition he’s been facing leaves a lot to be desired. Holyfield was getting battered by the 2nd tier Williams. It’s scary to think what a 1st tier heavyweight would have done with Holyfield.
