De La Hoya: Chavez Jr. “Doesn’t have it, no pop on his punches”

By Dan Ambrose: It seems like I’m not the only one that wasn’t impressed with unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s 10 round decision win over Billy Lyell (22-9, 4 KO’s) last weekend. Oscar De La Hoya wasn’t exactly bowled over by Chavez’s win as well, saying this in his twitter account: “I was watching Chavez Jr. last night and I’m sorry, but he just doesn’t have it. There’s no pop on his punches, but wish him the best.” I agree with De La Hoya. Chavez Jr. looked slow and sluggish in the Lyell fight, lacking power and hand speed.

Chavez easily won the fight. There’s no question that he was the better fighter, but he lacked power and was unable to overpower a guy much smaller than him in Lyell. It wasn’t just that Lyell was able to take Chavez’s shots. It was a case of Chavez just not having any power on his punches and not having blazing speed. He looked about the same par as John Duddy, a fighter that Chavez Jr. just finished beating his prior fight.

It doesn’t matter that Chavez Jr. doesn’t look good. He’s being given a title shot anyway against the recently appointed WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik. Chavez has a good chance of winning that fight and we could be seeing him as champion by May. Chavez’s promoter Bob Arum could be putting Chavez’s fight against Zbik on CBS/Showtime, where it will reach a massive amount of people. The fight is no doubt going to be a pay-per-view bout, which seems kind of strange given that Chavez Jr. isn’t an established fighter. However, his some of his fights already have been PPV events, because he’s popular in Mexico and has a large Mexican following in the United States.
