Body fat limit for heavyweights?

By Ben James: As a life long boxing enthusiast who is appalled at the physical condition a vast majority of heavyweight fighters keep themselves in. I would just like to throw out there this simple suggestion for use in certain boxing weight classes.

Something has to be done to improve the heavyweight division, all these big overweight guys coming into the ring and sluggishly fighting, or should I saw brawling, because compared to the old school heavyweights or even the lower weight classes of the modern era, there is very little athletic talent on display in most heavyweight fights. Its all about massive size and power, that is not sport, that is brawling until one guy gets tired and the other lands a big punch.

One thing that could be done is putting in place a weight limit for the heavyweight division. Anything from 200lb to 250lb. Personally I do not believe that is the best solution, as it puts really big tall fighters who are strong, fit and healthy at a disadvantage and still gives plenty of room for shorter heavyweights to come in looking like a sumo wrestler.

My suggestion would be to impose a body fat limit on all heavyweight fighters. Using reliable technology like a bod pod or another method of determining the percentage of body fat on the fighters bodies 24 hours before the fight.

The average body fat level of a normal average man is around 20%, this man is not an athlete or a fighter. So surely any athlete coming to fight with above average body fat levels surely could have prepared themselves more and come to fight in better condition?

If they are not willing to control what they eat and burn off excess body fat then do not let them fight. This is a sport, and its about time heavyweight boxers start treating themselves like athletes.
