Alexander’s manager says they’re ready to fight Maidana in the Summer – Boxing News

By Dan Ambrose: Kevin Cunningham, the trainer/manager for former WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 KO’s), says they can fight Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) in the Summer, according to Dan Rafael.

Presumably, the wait is because Alexander just got spanked by WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s) last weekend and Alexander suffered a couple of cuts over his eyes due to Bradley’s sharp head. The fight was filled with headbutts, some of which weren’t entirely the fault of Bradley.

Maidana says he’s game to fight Alexander. However, it’s not necessarily his call. HBO is going to be the ultimate decider if they want to put on the Bradley-Maidana fight and they just pass on that match-up because if they feel that fight won’t be an interesting bout. Maidana is a pressure fighter much like Bradley, only Maidana is a lot better at it and is bigger and punches a lot harder than Bradley.

If Bradley was able to get Alexander back-peddling and looking to survive all night, you can only guess that Maidana would have Alexander sporting track shoes in a fight. If HBO sees what I see when I look at Alexander, they may opt to use Maidana in a better way than this.

Alexander would be perfect for someone like Victor Ortiz, Lamont Peterson or the loser of the Zab Judah vs. Kaizer Mabuza fight. But with Maidana, there’s too much of likelihood that we would be seeing Alexander backing up all night long, clinching all the time and just looking to spoil and survive against Maidana.
