Wladimir says he took Chisora fight because he didn’t trust Haye

By Dan Ambrose: IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) recently decided to take an April 30th tune-up bout against Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) despite having a scheduled July 2nd bout on tap with WBA heavyweight champion David Haye.

Wladimir explained why he took the tune-up bout, saying he hadn’t fought since September and besides that, he didn’t trust that Haye would make the July 2nd bout. Wladimir didn’t want to lose even more time without fighting.

In an article at the nypost.com, Wladimir said “If I don’t fight until July and then maybe Haye doesn’t show up and I will be off for one year. I want to stay active.”

When Wladimir puts it that way, it’s hard to blame him for wanting to take a tune-up just in case Haye does a disappearing act or goes into a long stall. Wladimir already lost a great deal of time trying to get a fight with Haye in 2009, only to have Haye come up lame with an injury just weeks before the fight.

Wladimir is still hoping to fight Haye in 2011, because he wants his WBA strap, which would give the Klitschko brothers all the major titles if he or his brother Vitali are able to take the title from Haye.

Wladimir says “We’re looking to get the WBA belt that David Haye holds, so I’m hoping we’ll make that fight this year to get all the titles under one name. Klitschko.”

It might not be easy getting Haye in the ring at this point because his feelings are hurt about Wladimir taking the Chisora fight and he has a tough fight ahead of him against Ruslan Chagaev. Haye may lose that fight.
