The Haye-Wladimir fight could have taken place in April if Khan had agreed to move his fight

Image: The Haye-Wladimir fight could have taken place in April if Khan had agreed to move his fightBy William Mackay: The Wladimir Klitschko vs. David Haye fiasco could have been easily resolved had WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan agreed to move his April 16th pay-per-view bout to May so that the much more lucrative Haye vs. Klitschko bout could have taken place in that month. Apparently, Sky television only shows one PPV event per month, and the fight month that Klitschko and Haye wanted was April but couldn’t do it because Khan already had that date.

The next available month then was July, and that’s what Wladimir and Haye agreed on. However, Wladimir then decided to take a tune-up fight before the July 2nd date against Dereck Chisora because Wladimir hasn’t fought since September when he easily defeated Samuel Peter by a 10th round TKO. It would be hard on Wladimir to have to sit out of action for seven months before finally fighting Haye. It seems perfectly reasonable then that Wladimir should opt to take a tune-up bout before then.

Wladimir’s manager Bernd Boente said this in an article by Dan Rafael at ESPN about wanting Khan to move his fight: “We asked them to change the Khan date, maybe move it back to May, but they didn’t want to do that.” Presumably, Boente is talking about Sky. That’s pretty disappointing that Sky would choose the Khan bout, which is probably against the weak punching Lamont Peterson over a much more popular fight between Haye and Wladimir. Khan may end up being a flash in the pan very soon by getting knocked out by Timothy Bradley or Devon Alexander. I don’t see any reason why the Khan bout shouldn’t be pushed back or made earlier. Let Khan face the little known Peterson in March.
