Sturm interested in Sergio Martinez and Sebastian Sylvester bouts

By Dan Ambrose: World Boxing Association (WBA) Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (34-2-1, 14 KO’s) will be defending his title against 2nd tier middleweight Ronald Hearns (26-1, 20 KO’s) on February 19th at the Porsche Arena, in Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.

This is the typical kind of opponent that the 31-year-old Sturm has faced during his career and he’s been consistent about not fighting better fighters which is sad.

In an interview at fightnews.com, Sturm says that he would be interested in fighting WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez or IBF title holder Sebastian Sylvester. However, Sturm didn’t say when he would like to fight them.

It seems completely unnecessary for Sturm to fight Sylvester again, as he already fought him in November 2008 and easily beat him by a lopsided 12 round decision. Going over old ground seems like a waste of time for Sturm, but it does seem like something he would do because it would give him a payday.

When asked if he would be interested in fighting WBO middleweight champion Dimitriy Pirog, Sturm sounded less enthusiastic, saying that he’s a tough fighter. It didn’t seem like Sturm was all that interested in getting in the ring with Pirog.

Sturm may end up being forced to fight the winner of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Hassan N’Dam N’ Jikam bout at some point in the future. That’s going to be an especially tough fight for Sturm because Golovkin, who will probably emerge the winner in his fight with N’Jikam, hits very hard and won’t be stopped by Sturm’s jabs. Whatever the case, it will be good just to see Sturm finally facing someone that can actually fight for a change.

Sturm would likely lose badly to Martinez, and I have serious doubts he’ll ever fight the guy. Sturm will likely continue to fight the kinds of fighters that he’s been fighting all his career until forced to face someone like Golovkin but not Martinez.
