Should boxing have a Super Heavyweight Division?

By Allen Hmiel: So many boxing champions and so many belts in so many organizations how diluted is the sport today? Without a worldwide boxing commissioner who rules the sport boxing is still going in five different directions. But my point is today should boxing add a Super Heavyweight Divison over 275 pounds? The current 25 pound weight gap between Cruiserweight and Heavyweight 175 to 200 opens up the possibility that another Super Heavy Division at 275 pounds gives boxing the opportunity to create some new excitement and generate some additional interest for the large men who one are not currently boxing today because of their size.

Think of it as the boxing division for the large men who are too slow to compete with the quicker heavies at under 250 lbs. who can out maneuver them in the ring and beat them with speed and quickness. Chris Arreola and Shannon Briggs and Nikoli Valuev come to mind quickly as three guys who were outclassed due to a lack of speed in their titles opportunities. The new 275 lb and above division would open the door to the large huge guys in the world and give them the opportunity to enter the sport and have a division where their size and lack of great quickness would give them equal fights with other larger fighters. The 275 lb weight limit would also be the minimum requirement for a fighter to weigh to fight in this division. No fighter who weighs under 275 lbs can fight for the Super Heavyweight belt.

With the lack of quality fighters currently at Heavyweight today this could possibly open the doors for many hundreds of athletes and boxers to enter the Super Division and get an opportunity to show their skills and talents without being embarrassed by quicker lighter faster fighters under their weights. How many Pro athletes from the States or Europe even MMA could possibly enter the Super Heavy Division? Boxing is letting go of it’s fan base and losing audiences by letting the little guys dominate the sport. Here is a wonderful opportunity to create some excitement and get some fresh blood into an dying sport. Let’s face it watching the little 140 pounders has nothing to watching two 300 lb behemoths slugging it out with thunderous blows landing from all angles. Create the Super Division and fill it up with the powerful giants that can bring some new life into the dying sport.
