Image: Rafael: No chance of immediate Alexander-Bradley rematch - HBO won't pick up the optionBy Jim Dower: WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 KO’s) might be happy about having a rematch clause with WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s) after losing a 10 round technical decision to Bradley last Saturday night. However, because of how boring and basically unwatchable that fight ended up, the rematch clause is pretty much meaningless because HBO isn’t going to want to put this boring match-up back to together on their network.

This opinion was also backed up by ESPN writer Dan Rafael, who said this on his twitter page: “There isn’t going to be a Bradley-Alexander immediate rematch. No chance HBO picks up the option. None.” Alexander may get his rematch at some point, but it likely won’t be shown by HBO when he does fight Bradley for a second time. Alexander’s stock went way down by the way the fight ended with him seemingly quitting after a clash of heads in the 10th.

It wasn’t just that. Alexander fought passively throughout the fight and didn’t looked like an exciting fighter. This was the second consecutive fight in which Alexander has failed to impress. He looked just as bad, if not worse, in his controversial 12 round decision over former WBA light welterweight champion Andriy Kotelnik last year. The poor performance against Bradley might have been the kiss of death for Alexander, because HBO is looking to put exciting fighters and Alexander is looking more and more like a boring fighter.

Bradley’s stock also looks to have gone down with this fight. He didn’t impress, and looked weak against Alexander. Bradley has a fight coming up with WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan in his next fight in September. If Bradley loses that fight, then there’s no point in Alexander and Bradley fighting again, at least not on HBO. The fight can certainly take place but it might be better suited for ESPN by that point because neither Alexander or Bradley will have titles by then.
