Image: Prescott tells Khan to "Act like a champion" and fight himBy William Mackay: Colombian knockout artist Breidis Prescott (23-2, 19 KO’s) thinks WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) is unconcerned with his legacy, and doesn’t want any part of trying to avenge his 1st round knockout loss to Prescott from 2008. Khan, 24, has been looking to take the safe route and is poised to fight EBU light welterweight champion Paul McCloskey on April 16th instead of a more dangerous fighter.

McCloskey’s UK fans like to point out that The Ring Magazine has McCloskey ranked number #10 in the light welterweight division. However, I’ve seen McCloskey fight on a number of occasions and he’s painfully slow, incredibly weak and he’s so hittable because he fights with his hands down by his sides in the manner of much faster fighters like Roy Jones Jr. I dismissed the The Ring’s light welterweight rankings completely after noticing that they have the slow as molasses Juan Urango ranked at number #6 above Lucas Matthysse, Victor Ortiz, Lamont Peterson and Zab Judah. After seeing that ranking from The Ring, I completely dismiss all their rankings. Urango is not better than Matthysse, Judah, Ortiz or Peterson. That’s a joke. I much prefer fightnews’ rankings and they don’t have McCloskey ranked in the top 16.

In a press release sent out today, Prescott had this to say about Khan: “Is he [Khan] really so unconcerned about his legacy and reputation that he’ll continue this sad campaign to shame unknown fighters [McCloskey] into the ring with him for chump change? Does he read what the boxing world is saying about what he’s doing?” Prescott then mentioned that Marcos Maidana, Khan’s last opponent, pointed out in a press release that Khan can always fall back on the excuse that his dangerous opponents have priced themselves out if/when his fans and HBO tries to pressure him to take on someone really good. Prescott says he’s starting to agree with Maidana on this point.

Khan doesn’t seem to want any part of Prescott for some reason. Prescott easily beat Khan and while Prescott has been beaten twice since his win over Khan, the fact remains that he owned Khan on that fight. A rematch between Khan and Prescott would likely draw a lot more fan interest and money on pay-per-view than a fight against McCloskey, because he’s not a popular fighter and few people have heard of him in the U.S. He’s not a hugely popular fighter in the UK, even though that’s where he comes from. He’s just a safe opponent for Khan to keep from getting knocked out.
