Image: Does Kessler deserve an automatic title shot after dropping out of the Super Six?By Allen Hmiel: Mikkel Kessler(43-2) the soft Dane and former Super Middleweight Champion seems to be contemplating a miraculous return to boxing in June against possibly against current WBO Super Middleweight Champion Robert Stieglitz (39-2). Kessler has stated that he will resume training sometime in March 2011. Is this the same Fighter who suddenly dropped out of the Super Six Tourney months back stating he couldn’t see correctly?

Kessler’s handlers stated they possibly thought his career could be in danger. Word was out that Kessler, when he healed would get an automatic title shot against the Super Six winner. Or possibly fight, the other soft never challenged Super Middleweight IBF Champion Lucian Bute (27-0) the Canadian/Romanian who usually fights in Montreal Did Kessler take a trip to Lourdes or Fatima and bathe in the holy waters or did the worlds’ top eye surgeons do their magic on his bad eye? Not a whole lot came out of the recuperation and fast healing process of the Fighting Dane. How badly was he actually hurt?

How does this happen where a fighter suddenly drops out of a competitive tournament relinquishing his title belt and makes a deal for a possible automatic title shot if and when his eye heals? Sounds like some back room deal making was made for the one eyed cyclops Kessler who gave up his belt for a more favorable title shot down the road. Kessler lost his two marquee fights in his career against Calzage where he was badly outclassed in November of 2007 and against the quicker Andre Ward who schooled the overrated slower Kessler in November of 2009 making Kessler quit. Mikkel did squeeze out a much debatable decision at home against the tentative Carl Froch that let many wondering how much did Kessler have left in his competitive tank?

Now they say Kessler is back in training soon for a another chance at continuing a stagnant and over hyped career fought mostly on European soil, really 40 of his 45 fights were held safely at home in Denmark not really a boxing hotbed. Does Mikkel deserve to automatically be given top choice of fighting for the WBO title in June and does he deserve to move to the top and get a chance to fight the Super Six Champion? Wouldn’t some question Kesslers’ toughness and reasons for quitting the Super Six and waiting till he thought he could get more favorable terms on his own timing? Boxing sure has many twists and turns and Kessler seems to be playing the game extremely well. Let’s see how this plays out.
