Khan says he won’t be fighting Katsidis next

By William Mackay: Well it looks like WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) won’t be fighting Australian Michael Katsidis (27-3, 22 KO’s) next after all. Khan revealed on his twitter page that he doesn’t plan on fighting Katsidis next, saying “Morning all, just for your information, I ain’t fighting Michael Katsidis and we ain’t even got him in our mix.” It’s nice to know there is mix and not just one opponent dialed in already.

The fighter that Khan has been mentioning as a possible opponent for him to fight next is 26-year-old light punching Lamont Peterson (28-1-1, 14 KO’s), who punches a little bit harder than the feather-fisted Paulie Malignaggi but not much. Peterson is ranked #6 by the World Boxing Association and fought to a 10 round draw with the hard hitting Victor Ortiz on December 11th. For some reason, this was seen as a minor victory for Peterson by some fans because he was expected to be knocked out by Ortiz.

Indeed, Ortiz had Peterson on the deck twice early in the fight but backed off instead of pressing the action to finish him off. But never the less, Peterson took a beating, looked horrible, and hardly did anything that was impressive in the fight. I had Ortiz winning by four rounds. Peterson would be good for Khan only in that he would have a lesser chance of knocking Khan out compared to someone like Ortiz, who would be a serious threat to Khan’s weak chin.

It’s good that Katsidis won’t be fighting Khan, because that would have been a horrible fight. Katsidis has no real power, and has lost three out of his last seven fights. I would have hated to see that one. However, Khan vs. Peterson is about the same. Peterson was totally dominated by Timothy Bradley in 2009, losing every round in a one-sided 12 round decision. Khan might look silly going over ground that was already covered by Bradley.
