Jorge Arce vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on Pacquiao-Mosley undercard on 5/7

By Chris Williams: Bob Arum just gave you one more reason to purchase the Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley fight card on May 7th, by adding a title fight between an old tired Jorge Arce vs. WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. to the card. Frankly, I’m not at all interested in seeing that mismatch. I’m not anymore interested in paying the big cash to see this PPV card, because the only good fight I can see on the card is the match-up between WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto and challenger Urbano Antillon. But I don’t think that fight is good enough to pay the $50 to $60 asking price for the pay-per-view card.

Arce is only 31, but it might as well be dog years because the guy not only ancient, but he looks terrible nowadays. The WBO has Arce ranked at #1 in the super bantamweight division, whereas I have Arce firmly ranked in the 2nd tier. I no longer see this guy as a top tier fighter. It’s been a couple of years since he took on a solid fighter and he was beaten against his last real good opponent in Simphiwe Nongqayi in 2009. In the same year, Arce was stopped by Vic Darchinyan in the 11th round of a totally one-sided fight. Arce recently was held to a 10 round draw against Lorenzo Parra in September 2010. I saw the fight and had Parra winning by four rounds.

Vazquez, 26, is second only to Toshuaki Nishioka in the division, and he’s going to make quick work of Arce. I don’t really want to see poor Arce get beaten up by this young kid, because Arce has been through too many wars and I just prefer not to have to see the guy taken trounced by Vazquez.
