Image: Burns faces Laryea on 3/12By Scott Gilfoid: Instead of facing his number #1 ranked contender Terdsak Janaeng or the dangers Roberto Guerrero, World Boxing Organization (WBO) super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (30-2, 7 KO’s) is dipping down into the number 10 spot to face the inexperienced Ghanaian Joseph Laryea (14-4, 11 KO’s) on March 12th at the Braehead Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland.

Given that Laryea is ranked at #10 and and isn’t even ranked in the top 16 by fightnews in the super featherweight division, I give Burns an excellent chance at beating Laryea. It’s great match-making. Burns can definitely win this fight. Too bad he’s not stepping up and taking on someone dangerous like Guerrero, Jorge Linares, Jandaeng, Jason Litzau, Celestino Caballero or Roman Martinez. I can’t see the point in Burns facing Laryea, other than a nice milking opportunity.

Laryea was beaten by Maxwell Awuku in 2009, Yakubu Amidu in 2007, Osumanu Akaba in 2006 and Yusif Salifu in 2002. I have never heard of any of these fighters, and it pretty much shows how weak Laryea is. The only fighter I can recognoze on Laryea’s resume is Paul Appleby, who Laryea defeated by a 12 round decision last December in 2010. I don’t rate Appleby, and I’m not surprised that Laryea beat that guy. Burns really needs to step it up some day. This is getting ridicious.

In his last fight, he defeated the obscure Andreas Evensen, another inexperienced fighter with only 14 fights under his belt at the time that Burns fought him. I don’t mind a fighter doing a little bit of milking every now and then, but come on, lets get to the meat already. Start stepping it, Burns, before you waste your 15 minutes of fame and get spanked by Martinez in a rematch or knocked cold by Litzau, Guerrero, Linares or Jandaeng.
