By Dan Ambrose: Heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (43-1, 28 KO’s) has reportedly signed the contract to face 37-year-old Kevin McBride (35-8-1, 29 KO’s) in a tune-up bout on April 16th, at the Spodek, Katowice, Poland. According to fightnews.com, the contracts have been signed for this fight, which is a warm-up for the 34-year-old Adamek for his September bout against one of the Klitschko brothers in Poland.

McBride hasn’t done much with his career since pulling off a huge upset in stopping a shot and old Mike Tyson in the 6th round in 2005. McBride, a career long B level fighter, has lost four out of his last five bouts, with one of them being a knockout loss to an old Andre Golota.

In terms of tune-ups, this would have be considered extremely low on the competitive scale for a fighter like Adamek to take. However, it shows you a little bit of his mental thinking as he approaches his big money fight against one of the Klitschko brothers. Adamek appears to be hesitant to take on a life opponent for fear he’ll get beat McBride may be tall like the Klitschkos at 6’6”, but that’s about all he has in common with them.

If Adamek thinks a fight against a guy like McBride is going to help prepare him for the Klitschkos, he’s sadly mistaken. It’s just a safe fight for him, just like his fights against B/C level heavyweights Michael Grant, 38, Vinny Manddalone, 36, Andre Golota, 42, Jason Estrada and Chris Arreola.

Adamek was a good puncher at cruiserweight and light heavyweight, but at the heavyweight level, he’s lost his power and is more of hit and run type fighter. Adamek has steered clear of younger, more dangerous heavyweights like Odlanier Solis, Alexander Povetkin and Denis Boystsov, to name just a few, to get his shot against the Klitschkos. Adamek was staggered by Arreola and also by the 38-year-old Grant. Adamek is not likely to do well against the Klitschkos, but he’ll definitely beat McBride.
