Image: Wladimir says to Chisora: "I intend to punish you"By Sean McDaniel: IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) isn’t happy with the amount of trash talking that his opponent Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) has been doing during their recent press conferences to hype their fight on Saturday December 11th. Chisora hasn’t had any qualms about down grounding Wladimir as a fighter, feeling that he hasn’t been good for the sport. At the press conference on Monday, Chisora said “No other countries want to watch you. No one will pay to watch you in Vegas because you stink up the joint.”

Wladimir clearly wasn’t expecting this kind of treatment from Chisora when he selected him out of a pack of much more experienced and perhaps talented heavyweights for him to fight. Chisora seems to be taking a play out of the playbook that WBA heavyweight champion David Haye used briefly when he was on course for a bout against Wladimir last year in June. However, Haye suddenly came up with a back injury just weeks before the fight and Wladimir had to find a replacement.

In Haye’s case, it seemed odd for him to be commenting on Wladimir’s accomplishments at the heavyweight level because Haye had only fought two times at heavyweight at the time he was set to fight Wladimir, and neither of those heavyweights were good enough for Haye to comment on Wladimir’s past opponents. But for Chisora to be talking about Wladimir’s style of fighting, which clearly works, it seems almost laughable given Chisora’s lack of quality opponents on his resume. It’s easy for Chisora to say that Wladimir’s style of fighting is boring because Chisora has been facing 2nd tier opposition in England his entire career. Without experience against quality opposition, Chisora looks a little silly.

It may be that Chisora’s goal, rightly on wrongly, was to anger Wladimir in hopes that he’ll want to brawl more and thus give Chisora a sliver of a chance to win. If that’s the case, then it shows you that Chisora believes that Wladimir is hard to beat when he’s boxing on the outside using his jab. But either way, Chisora is going to be in for a hard time because Wladimir, besides being bigger than him, has many more weapons and is a lot bigger puncher. This could backfire on Chisora with him getting knocked out quickly. Wladimir seems to be angry enough at Chisora to come out firing with big shots, and Wladimir is hard to beat when he’s opening up on his offense. The only way to beat him is to wait for him to tire out, and that’s not easy to do because he hits so hard, or hope to get lucky and land something big in between one of Wladimir’s big shots.

Wladimir said this to Chisora “I intend to punish you.” Wladimir’s trainer Emanuel Steward said “Chisora is a horrible person. I don’t have to motivate Wladimir. He will be more aggressive in this fight.”
