Will casual boxing fans gladly pay to see the Pacquiao-Mosley bout on PPV or shun it?

Image: Will casual boxing fans gladly pay to see the Pacquiao-Mosley bout on PPV or shun it?By Chris Williams: You can never overlook how gullible the casual boxing fans are because they’ll happily pay big money to see some of the worst stinkers that you could ever imagine. Now in looking at the Manny Pacquiao vs. the aged Shane Mosley fight set for May 7th in Las Vegas, this appears to be the stinker of stinkers. You would think that boxing fans, even the casual variety, would have enough sense in their heads to realize this is going to end badly for the 40ish Mosley, as he’s probably going to get beaten senseless very quickly by Pacquiao.

Me being a fan of action fights, I prefer to see competitive fights instead of hopeless mismatches. But that’s me. I never liked watching college football powerhouses taking on small scrub schools at the start of their season and running up huge scores like 72-0. That’s not entertaining to me. I’d like to think the casual boxing fan will see that Pacquiao is facing an old guy in Mosley, who’s seen better days, and opt to save their $50 or whatever this thing is priced at, and wait until Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum actually matches him against someone that has a chance to beat him.

I’ve been waiting for two years for Arum to match Pacquiao up with someone that had a chance going into the fight and I’m still waiting. For whatever reason, ever since Pacquiao was almost beaten by Juan Manuel Marquez in 2008, Arum has matched Pacquiao against fighters without any counter punching skills or ability to really move at all. Again and again, Pacquiao has been put in with fighters that just go right at him or else stand there and take punishment.

Mosley is more of the same. I’m really wondering if the casual boxing fan will be able to tell the difference between what Pacquiao has been facing and what he should be facing. I think if Arum doesn’t a great job at marketing this fight with the help of HBO’s 24/7 series, this fight might not bring in the big bucks that he’s been accustomed to getting for the Pacquiao bouts as of late. After a certain point of putting Pacquiao in one-sided mismatches again and again there’s diminishing returns.

If you want to keep getting gold, you have to give something back in the way of good entertainment. Sadly, I haven’t see Pacquiao in with an entertaining opponent since the Marquez fight two long years ago, and it looks like Arum doesn’t want to put Pacquiao back in with Marquez or even someone like Andre Berto. As such, we can continue to look forward to mismatches in the future. Hopefully, the casual boxing fan votes with their wallets and ignores the Pacquiao-Mosley fight.
