Image: Who is the best trainer in boxing right now?By Allen Hmiel: Fighters have special talents and skills that enable each boxer to maximize their talents. Some fighters progress naturally and make the use of their given talents and skills and instincts to move up the ladder of success. But no fighter is that good to not take advantage of additional learning and skills that a shrewd skillful trainer can provide. A great boxing trainer brings out the best in his fighter and develops new strategies that place his fighter in the best position to win.

Trainers develop speed and footwork and improve the punching power of their fighters. A good trainer can teach a boxer how to throw a powerful jab and to slip a punch. Trainers can teach defense and lateral movement and what punches to throw and when. Trainers provide usually between rounds sound calming advice and guidance.

Good fighters have become great through the expert advice of great trainers and sound management. The list of great championship trainers currently is short with Roach-Steward-both Mayweathers Floyd Sr. and Roger and Nazim Richardson leading the corners of today’s top fighters. But who else is out there in a training role that can actually help their fighters improve and maximize their boxing talent? I see fighters fighting now some even hold belts that have corners that sometimes seem to impede their development rather that spur their professional growth and development.

Is every fighter being developed and given the best advice and training absolutely not. Some fighters remain loyal to their trainers from an early age who do not have the tools and knowledge necessary to provide the expert advice needed to develop a champion fighter. Champion boxers need champion tutelage and expert guidance to succeed. It is so sad to see some fighters currently fighting being cussed out between rounds or not being given any type of advice that might help them. Some fighters climbing through the ring ropes have trainers climbing in after them that might not be as good as their opponents trainers. How much of a detriment is it if a fighter doesn’t have the best corner? Or does it matter?

Most experts would have a hard time ranking the special talents and long track records of todays marquee trainers but a special nod would have to go to those trainers with the championship pedigree of more than one champion and over how long of successful fighter development and championships earned.

It would be hard not to say Manny Steward with his stellar reputation and results along with Freddie Roach’s successful record of champions would head any list. But who is out there after the mentioned five? I see every fighter has a trainer but does every fighter have a good trainer who knows what they are doing and successfully developing and preparing their world class fighters with world class ability?

Fighters fight and trainers train and the perfect match-up makes championships.
