Prescott is the better opponent for Khan than Peterson

By William Mackay: I think I speak for pretty much everyone here when I say that the next opponent for WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) should be knockout article Breidis Prescott rather than the light punching no chance Lamont Peterson.

Prescott has history with Khan having stopped him in one round in 2008, and boxing fans in the UK, which is where Khan plans to fight next, are much more familiar with Prescott compared to the little known Peterson.

If the idea is for Khan to pick out an opponent that his British fans actually care to see then Khan can’t go wrong with Prescott. But if Khan is just looking to protect his glass jaw and find someone that he thinks he can beat without having to worry about getting knocked cold, then Peterson is the way for him to go. The guy can’t punch to save his life and has a low work rate to boot.

I think I know the match-making tendencies for Khan, which is why I’m pretty sure the hard punching Prescott won’t get picked for Khan. Prescott has got Khan’s number and would likely knock him out in one or two rounds in a rematch. Khan’s management don’t want him to get stretched, so there going to likely put him in with Peterson, who throws punches as if he’s giving away $100 bills. He doesn’t throw a lot.

I’d like to see if Khan’s chin could hold up under Prescott’s bombs this time around, especially given all the punishment Khan took in his last fight against Marcos Maidana. Khan was staggered badly in that fight and took major shots from rounds 10 through 12. Khan says he shouldn’t have mixed it up with Maidana, as if he really had a choice in the matter. Khan was running for his life until he got caught in the 10th by a right hand while moving laterally on the outsides. He was already running but Maidana was able to close the distance on that occasion and hurt him. Once Khan was hurt, there was no way he could avoid the shots other than holding on to Maidana while getting clubbed with his free left hand over and over again until rescued by referee Joe Cortez. It was a bad beating.

Khan says he can avoid shots but I don’t buy that. Khan also says he’ll knock Prescott out in three rounds next time out. That I would like to see. Khan needs to prove that he can stand in with this guy, because many people think he’s running scared of him after being knocked out so badly.

Khan needs to think about his loyal British fans. They don’t want to see him fight Peterson, who’s coming off of a 12 round draw, which I thought he lost. Khan’s fans want to see him rematch Prescott and prove he can beat this puncher. I’m not holding my breath waiting for that to happen. I smell fear from Khan and don’t think he’ll ever even try to avenge his defeat.
