Not impressed with Donaire’s victory over Sidorenko

By Chris Williams: Unlike a lot of fans of Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s), I’m not about to crown him as the number #1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world after his 4th round stoppage win over the made to order Wladimir Sidorenko (22-3-2, 7 KO’s) last Saturday night. Donaire looked like Wladimir Klitschko standing next to the shorter Sidorenko, and the size advantage that Donaire had in this alone was more than enough for him to get the win. But it was the perfect opponent for Donaire to looked against.

I mean Sidorenko had no power whatsoever to speak of and wasn’t able to make Donaire run around the ring all night long trying to avoid getting hit like Donaire did in his unimpressive win over Rafael Concepcion last year in August. Without the power or the size to fight Donaire, Sidorenko was left to nothing but his weak jab and an occasional power shot to try and fend him off. It was never going to be a fight. Sidorenko had already lost two out of his last three fights going into the bout.

If that doesn’t give you a signal of what he was for Donaire, then I don’t what would. The guy was brought in for Donaire to look good against, and hopefully get fans to buy into the hype. Instead of being matched against a bantamweight with power and size that would cause Donaire trouble, he was put in with the weak punching and small Sidorenko. I can’t get excited about Donaire’s win over Sidorenko because he fought a small weak guy. Why not Concepcion again or at least Anselmo Moreno?

In the last few fights, Donaire has looked much bigger than his opponents. I think it’s not hard for Donaire to look good when he’s got everything going for him with size, speed and power. I won’t be impressed until he shows that he can beat Fernando Montiel and Hozumi Hasegawa. I don’t think Donaire can.
