Image: Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana – Reaction to Saturday’s battleBy Jon Neale: About a week ago I wrote an article on this website titled ‘Amir Khan – Glass Jaw? Actually NO… and here’s why’. In this article I made some observations (some based on fact some based on opinion) about why Amir Khan would not buckle under the inevitable pressure and vicious punching power of the tremendous Marcos Maidana.

A considerable number of the readers of this site were very kind in acknowledging that I was simply commenting (in a hopefully unbiased fashion) that Amir Khan is the type of talent the sport of Boxing needs in order to continue to enthrall and entertain us fans and at least continue to keep the less passionate fans engaged so that they don’t mutiny to the H.M.S MMA/UFC!!! Thankfully Amir displayed exactly what I hoped and expected him to do and therefore there was a degree of accuracy about my original publication…

This Saturday’s WBA Light-welterweight Championship showdown between Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana had more action in its 12 rounds than the Heavyweight division has seen in 12 years! Already I see there are detractors and naysayers banging on about the injustice of the decision and that Amir Khan ‘ran all night’… To these individuals, I would like to suggest that if you can’t just be thankful that a Championship boxing contest between two of the best fighters in one of the best divisions put on an unbelievable show and thrilled a packed Mandalay bay and Millions around the world…. then surely your time would be better spent watching another Sport. In this day and age Boxing all too often is about Money and NOT about the best fighting the best. Regardless of your opinion of Amir Khan he took on a fighter who most would not dare to. He called out Maidana, beat him and is now prepared to fight anyone at 140lbs… Where is the problem?

As for Marcos Maidana, his stock will have surely risen… I would suggest that the next opponent for him would be the loser of the Alexander/Bradley fight but I seriously doubt either boxer would take Maidana on… If Khan can unify the 140lb division I would be surprised if Maidana didn’t end up cleaning up when Khan moves up to Welterweight.

For all the angry, offensive, opinionated commentators who visit this site please take a moment to acknowledge that Saturday’s fight has created a huge amount of publicity and interest for the sport of Boxing and that can only be a good thing for all us fans!

Let’s hope 2011 starts the way 2010 finished!
