Image: Khan wants Mayweather in 12 months after unifiying the light welterweight titlesBy William Mackay: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) has a big wish list for 2011, hoping to beat his next opponent in April, then defeat the winner of the light welterweight title clash between Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander. And then to top it off, Khan plans on fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr and hopes he’d be willing to fight in the UK.

It all sounds like a pipe dream on Khan’s part given that he was battered by his last opponent Marcos Maidana for the last three rounds of their fight last weekend and looked about as bad as a fighter could look while still staying on his feet. Khan looked like future fodder for Bradley, Alexander and Mayweather, although I can’t see Mayweather even bothering to destroy Khan after he gets whipped by Bradley or Alexander. But it is nice to have dreams, and Khan has plenty of those.

In boxing news from the BBC Radio 5 Live, Khan said “It’s a possibility in the future [ a pipe dream fight against Mayweather]. A lot of people say I want to fight Mayweather next. I want to fight Mayweather in 12 months. It gives me time to mature and get more experience. Hopefully around April I want to get one more fight in before I unify the division.”

It doesn’t really matter if the Mayweather fight occurs next in April or 12 months from now. Khan simply doesn’t have anywhere near the skills to compete with Mayweather. Heck, Mayweather could probably get off his couch without any training and whip Khan around the ring like he’s toying with an unskilled adolescence. Mayweather several levels above Khan in skills and athletic ability. But worst than that. Having seen Khan fight many times and having seen both Bradley and Alexander fight, I don’t give Khan any chance of beating those guys. It doesn’t matter if a referee is in the ring that pulls apart the action when Khan is taking punishment on the inside like he was against Maidana, he’ll still be way over his head against Bradley or Alexander. Those guys are the real deal.

Khan continues with the pipe dream talk “The interest would be huge in England [for a Mayweather bout]. I want to bring the biggest fights over here. To get Mayweather to fight in England would be a huge success.”

I think Khan needs to wake up. No way will Mayweather agree to fight on foreign soil, especially a non-neutral one like the UK where he would be fighting in front of a huge pro-Khan crowd. I can’t see that happening in this lifetime. Hopefully, Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach talks some sense into him and clues him into the reality that Mayweather, if he ever does agree to fight Khan, would only do it in the U.S. in a place like Las Vegas. But Mayweather would have to agree to fight Khan after Khan gets destroyed by Bradley and/or Alexander, and I can’t see him doing that.
