Judah to face Mabuza in February or March

By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Zab Judah (40-6, 27 KO’s) will be facing the tough South African Kaizer Mabuza (23-6, 14 KO’s) in February or March for the IBF light welterweight title at the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey.

For Judah, 33, this is going to be a chance for him to capture another title. It’s been five years since he last held a title, and if he can beat Mabuza, Judah will be back in business at least temporarily.

Mabuza, ranked #1 by the IBF, is a tough fighter and recently defeated Kendall Holt. Judah is going to have to stay away from this fighter at all costs because Mubuza punches hard and with his high work rate, he’ll quickly wear Judah down if Zab makes the mistake of trying to trade shots with him.

This fight could end up being very similar to Judah’s last bout against Lucas Martin Matthysse in November. In that fight, Judah got off to a fast start, but then ran out of gas after the 4th round and began to run for the rest of the fight.

Although Judah appeared to have lost the fight in the view of many fans, he ended up getting the nod by two of the judges and won a 12 round split decision. Judah was knocked down in the 10th round by Matthyssse and looked shaky for the last three rounds as Matthysse stalked him around the ring and punishment him with shots.

Judah will have the benefit of fighting Mabuza at the Prudential Center, which will be home advantage for Zab. This comes after his promotional team won the purse bid for the fight. This enables Judah to have the fan backing, and possibly will help him win a decision again if the fight is somewhat close, as was the case with Judah’s last fight.

Hopefully, Judah actually does enough to win without controversy this time because he sure looked like a loser in his last fight against Matthysse.
