The night David Haye made Audley’s Destiny to Retire

By Gary Jones: So the best of enemies seem to be the best of friends once again, this was a night where Audley “A-Force” Harrison could realise his destiny (as he puts it) and finally claim that piece of gold that has eluded him for over ten years, but all that came to an end when David “Haymaker” Haye got a TKO victory in the third round.

So after all the talk, hype and promises from Audley Harrison, he once again failed to deliver the goods. With most people expecting Audley to come into this fight with some new found confidence and self belief, he simply folded up and that allowed David Haye to come at him.

The first two rounds were nothing to speak of as both fighters stepped back and sized each other up, Haye did throw a combination in the second that forced Harrison onto the ropes, Audley defended Haye’s first onslaught and the only reply Harrison could muster was a solid jab that did land on Haye and seemed to cause him a moments discomfort. That was the only punch Harrison managed to connect with the entire fight, after that it was all Haye.

The third round Haye came to life, Haye started to throw more punches and it wasn’t long before they were finding the mark, and with the ever tentative, just hang back and throw no punches style of Audley Harrison it soon landed him in trouble. Once Haye could see Harrison was hurt he unleashed with shot after shot which inevitably knocked Harrison down to the canvas. To his credit Audley did get back to his feet and after an eight count after the referee restarted the fight.
Harrison did look really dazed and jaded from the Hayemakers first barrage of punches, soon after the count Haye quickly stepped in to finish the job, the explosiveness that Haye possesses was evident again as Audley began to buckle a second time from the number of shots he was having to block. With the referee watching ever observantly and with nothing coming back from Audley the referee made the decision to end the contest and spare Harrison a second knockdown. Audley certainly wasn’t A- FORCE in this contest.

After the fight it looked like Haye and Harrsion had made up for the years of bitterness between them. Haye displaying dignity in victory went into Harrison’s corner and shook his hand with Audley seeming to accept his handshake which would suggest these two have know made-up

So what now for Harrison?, he’s said for many years his destiny was to become a world champion but he’s more destined for the scrapheap based on this performance, not once did Harrison make this the fight of Hayes’s life as he promised in the build up he would do. He’s made some decent money from boxing and he’s earned around £1.5 Million for this fight, so now it’s time to step back realise that he couldn’t cut it as a Heavyweight contender and enjoy his retirement.

As for David Haye the futures bright, twice he’s proven he can beat people who are heavier and physically bigger than him (although they weren’t fantastic opposition – Valuev and Audley). The next logical step and to be honest the only step he should be making is a fight with one of the Klitschko brothers. After the fight Haye did say in a post match interview he would make that fight happen.
I personally would like to see him face off against Wladamir first instead of Vitali as I consider him to be the undisputed No.1 Heavyweight and seeing as he’s holding the majority of the titles a victory for Haye over Wladimir would mean he could negotiate for Vitali to fight him in the UK. Wether or not Haye could box the Klitschko’s the same way he did with his last couple of opponents remains to be seen, However if Haye said he will make the fight next year I predict May 2011 would be the expected fight date. Can’t wait for that.
