Image: Miguel Cotto: Who’s next for the Puerto Rican star?By Dallan o’ Donnell: With a decision on Miguel Cotto’s next opponent still up in the air it has left boxing fans debating who his next fight should be against. Many names have been thrown around and a few tasty bouts could be on the horizon but I believe a decision won’t come until after the Pacquaio and Margarito fight this Saturday as Bob Arum wants to see if he can match Cotto with the winner. Cotto has said he would come back down to welterweight if the opponent was right and I am sure both Pacquaio and Margarito are just right in Cotto’s mind.

His only two professional defeats came against Pacquaio and Margarito and he would love to exact revenge and exorcise those defeats from his mind. Both fights would be exciting rematches but I hope Bob Arum decides on a new opponent for Cotto. Plenty of names have been mentioned none more so than Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The unbeaten and never fully tested Mexican would be my pick of opponent even though he has never been in a ring with anyone with Cotto’s pedigree.

Chavez may be the type of fighter to rise to the occasion of a possible fight with Cotto although that may have to wait until next year with Chavez already fighting in December. Another possible opponent could be Saul Alvarez another unbeaten Mexican fighter, although he fights in December also, against Lovemore N’dou. If both Chavez and Alvarez overcome their respective fights it could be an interesting 2011 for Cotto. Former IBF Welterweight champion Kermit Cintron has also been mentioned but you would have to be a diehard Cintron fan to want to see that fight. The smart money would be on Cotto fighting a Top Rank stable mate with a Pacquaio- Margarito rematch most likely. Whoever the Puerto Rican star does fight next we know it won’t lack for excitement.
