Image: Why Joe Calzaghe is right to stay retiredBy Ben James: Ever since former undisputed super middleweight world champion Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO’s) retired after his fight with former P4P king of the sport Roy Jones Jr (who by the way really needs to retire, and should have done so maybe 10 fights ago!), fans and haters of Calzaghe have been calling for him to fight again, questioning his legacy in the sport.

I do not doubt for one moment that if Joe WANTED to he could come out of retirement and put up a decent fight against any of today’s contenders, but he will eventually be beaten. The man knows his own body and his own mind, he has no desire to fight again and no financial pressure to do so.

Even as a Joe Calzaghe fan I am willing to admit that he wasted a large portion of his career by not fighting out of the United Kingdom. He lost out on many big fights with some huge names in their prime while he was defending his title against average fighters playing it safe.

Having said that it was not like the big names were willing to come to the UK to take on Joe, he was not a big enough financial draw for the superstars to take a huge risk fighting him. Calzaghe could have chased these fights, ran his mouth a bit and forced the fights to happen.

All I can say to Joe now is please stay retired. There will always be another young hot shot with a lot more hunger than you with youth on his side, its not worth you fighting again. Just stick with trying to remain a Z list celebrity in the UK and lay off the drugs. Save your money and enjoy your retirement with your family and friends.

Thank you for your contribution to the sport I love, you achieved more than 99.9% of boxers will ever accomplish. You did not fully take advantage of your potential but I am not going to hate you for that.
