Martinez-Williams II: Can Paul and Sergio make another classic?

By Peter Wells: As the old saying goes; “Good things come to those who wait”. For Paul Williams it hasn’t worked out that way yet. Now at 29 he’s moved from Welterweight to Middleweight in search of that career defining fight, how long can a man wait for his destiny. Maybe he just hasn’t waited long enough yet but with both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather announcing they won’t be around much longer it’s hard to keep the faith. “The Punisher” doesn’t want to go down the path of not ever getting his name lodged in everyone’s head, even when he has proved to be fan friendly, a quality fighter and boxer and a down to earth guy who just wants to prove how good he is.

For hardcore boxing fans around the world Paul Williams is one fighter you wouldn’t miss fight. Especially against Sergio Martinez after there classic last year. After 12 brutal rounds and 1 knockdown apiece. Williams came out with the victory via majority decision which was disputed by some, but it could have gone either way in all fairness.

For the first fight both fighters had 3 weeks to train for each other after Kelly Pavlik pulled out of a fight with Williams. Sergio denied that he was already preparing for Williams as he believed Pavlik would pull out. Well one thing is for sure he wouldn’t have been the only one to predict such an obvious outcome.

Sergio has by far had the better time since the classic war, getting himself a shot at Kelly Pavlik’s WBC and WBO Middleweight crowns. Martinez was victorious as many believed Williams would do. Williams has carried on being avoided except by Kermit Cintron until he threw himself out the ring in the 4th. The result was a controversial technical decision.

Williams insists he’ll be better this time around, and so does Sergio. Last time Williams struggled with an opponent was when he lost to Carlos Quintana, the rematch didn’t even last a round so we can ultimately forget the first encounter.

Martinez is much better than Quintana and at a catch weight of 158lbs will be much stronger. I don’t believe it will be as good as the first but it’ll still be one to remember with Williams winning more convincingly this time around.
